Üsküdar has been a key settlement since Byzantine times and retains a character that feels distinctly more traditional than its European-side counterparts. The district is densely layered with Ottoman history — the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, Şemsi Paşa Mosque, and Maiden's Tower are all within walking distance of the ferry terminal.
Daily Life
Üsküdar's main square and the streets around Bağlarbaşı are busy with local commerce — greengrocers, bread bakeries, traditional sweet shops, and çay houses that are open from dawn to midnight. The neighbourhood is family-oriented and conservative by Istanbul standards.
Rental Market
Üsküdar offers some of the best value on the Bosphorus-facing Asian shore. A 3+1 apartment in a well-maintained building runs ₺35,000–₺60,000 per month — significantly less than comparable space in Kadıköy or Beşiktaş.
Transport
Ferries to Eminönü, Beşiktaş, and Karaköy. The Marmaray and M5 metro give direct connections under the Bosphorus and across the Asian side.
