Istanbul's Asian side — the Anatolian shore of the Bosphorus — gets a lot of love from expats who have made the jump from the European side. But is it the right choice for you?

The Lifestyle Difference

The Asian side is quieter, less dense, and more residential. Neighbourhoods like Bağcılar, Ataşehir, and Maltepe offer wider streets, more parks, and significantly less tourist traffic than Taksim or Sultanahmet.

The Ferry Factor

Many Asian-side residents develop a love affair with the city's ferry network. A 20-minute crossing to Karaköy or Eminönü is a genuinely pleasant commute — with tea, simit, and Bosphorus views included. The downside is that ferries stop running around midnight.

Rent and Value

For the same budget, you typically get a larger apartment on the Asian side. A 3+1 in Kadıköy or Üsküdar often costs less than a 2+1 in Beşiktaş.

The Marmaray tunnel and expanded metro lines have dramatically cut commute times, making the Asian side increasingly practical for professionals who work on the European side.
